DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY SURGERY
TREATMENT
- Laser Surgery
The most important treatment consists of using the laser to close or photo-coagulate the leaking blood vessels. With this treatment, no incision is required, and it can be performed in the doctor’s surgery. If diabetic retinopathy is discovered early, laser photo-coagulation can arrest the damage and decelerate the rate of vision loss.
If the vitreous humour is cloudy due to the presence of blood, laser surgery cannot be used until the blood settles or is removed. In some cases of bleeding into the vitreous humour, cryotherapy or freezing of the retina can help reduce the abnormal blood vessels.
- Vitrectomy
However, laser cannot be used in all patients. In the event of the vitreous humour being full of blood, a vitrectomy is performed: the blood-filled vitreous humour is extracted from the eye and replaced by an artificial transparent solution.
