STRABISMUS

Strabismus is the deviation of the alignment of one eye in relation to the other. It involves a lack of coordination between the eye muscles.
This makes it impossible to fix the gaze of both eyes on the same point in space, giving rise to incorrect binocular vision which can adversely affect the perception of depth.
When strabismus is congenital or is developed during childhood, it can cause amblyopia, a condition in which the brain ignores the vision of the deviated eye even though it is capable of seeing normally.
Apart from the visual problem, this defect can be considered an aesthetic problem because of the appearance of the deviated eyes.
TREATMENT
- MEDICAL TREATMENT:
which is very variable. Optical correction, glasses, occlusion with patches, special glass, muscle exercises: all this aimed at trying to restore the vision of the lazy eye and improve muscle action.
When the medical treatment is not enough and the eye continues to be “deviated”, it is necessary to resort to surgical treatment, strengthening or weakening the eye muscles.
The ophthalmologist will indicate what surgery is required to help achieve correct vision and prevent the eyes from deviating, but it is important to remember that it will be necessary to combine this with part of the aforementioned medical treatment.
Surgery can be performed on several eye muscles in one or both eyes; and it can sometimes be performed with the injection of “botulinum toxins”, to take the form of ambulatory surgery with local anaesthetic.
